Whole School - Long Term Plan

Intent

Art and Design aims to inspire children through a wide range of inspiring practical experiences to create original designs which explore the work of artists in a variety of different contexts. Children are excited to gain confidence are encouraged to explore a range of materials and techniques, to critically evaluate the work of known artists and craftworkers and then to take risks and be innovative when designing and creating their own work. As part of the art and design process, time is built in to reflect, evaluate and improve work, using design criteria and learning objectives. Opportunities are provided for children to evaluate key artists and art making techniques that have helped shape the world, showing the real impact of art and design within the wider environment and other cultures, helping to inspire children to become the next generation of creative artists.

Implementation

Through revisiting and consolidating technical skills, lessons help children build on prior knowledge alongside learning new skills, knowledge and challenges. The revision and introduction of key vocabulary is built into each lesson and through Art and Design lessons. We value active learning opportunities to immerse children fully into their first-hand, practical experiences. Children are inspired to develop a love of Art and Design and see how it has helped shape the world they live in. Careful planning ensures cross-curricular links, where possible. Children will build on a knowledge base and an understanding of methods and techniques used by other artists and craftworkers throughout history and in the modern day. The use of AI will be built into existing planning to further support and enhance the children’s learning.

Impact

We aim to encourage independence and an enquiring mind together with a thirst for learning. There is regular monitoring across the school and consultations with the children in each year group. Whole-school and parental engagement is supported using Art and Design in home learning tasks in addition to opportunities provided in lessons. Art and Design is loved by children across school, and they are encouraged to want to build on their wealth of skills and understanding, through practical activities which progress across the key stage. Impact can also be measured through key questioning and observing skills learned in lessons. Children also evaluate their own work against that of other artists and crafts makers and reflect on how they can make improvements in the future. Assessments aim to target next steps in learning.
